CityWorld: Zoo

The animals every zombie story walks past.

Eight zoo animals, each from a scene you remember: the giraffes at the overpass and the lab monkeys that never turned, the zebra in the snare, the deer in the snow, the lions that took it, Shiva, the elephant from Raccoon City's zoo - and a bear, because every zoo has a bear.

new mechanics to learn

Ordinary animals, on purpose

A spawn egg each. Nothing to craft.

They are plain Minecraft animals: they wander, they breed on their food, and the ones with teeth fight back if you hurt them. No new mechanics, no new items beyond the eggs. They just live in the world - and in the ruins of a city, they make the zoo look like somewhere people used to go.

  • ▸Giraffe and rhesus macaque (The Last of Us), zebra (Part II), deer (The Last of Us, I Am Legend).
  • ▸Lion (I Am Legend, 12 Monkeys, Resident Evil Outbreak), tiger (The Walking Dead), elephant (Resident Evil Outbreak), and a brown bear.
  • ▸Every one has its own voice, cut from real recordings: the giraffe's hum, the macaques' chatter, the elephant's rumble, the lion's roar.
  • ▸Every animal has a walk whose stride matches its speed, so feet plant and push instead of sliding. Idle, they sit, sniff, scratch, flap their ears and curl their trunks.
  • ▸The carnivores, the bear and the elephant fight back when hurt; the rest run. Lions, tigers and bears go for anyone near their cub.

The animals

Eight, and each does something of its own.

Giraffe

Five blocks tall, neck leaning forward as it walks, and it feeds from the canopy. Shove one mid-mouthful and it bends its neck to keep eating.

Rhesus macaque

A climber. It picks a trunk, climbs the log it is holding, works round branches, and sits in the canopy to eat. Leaps gaps of up to five blocks; never takes fall damage.

Zebra

Herds on the savanna, a donkey's bray and a barking whinny. One in a hundred is a little bit different. You will know it when you see it.

Deer

Skittish. It grazes, flicks its tail, lifts its head to look, and bolts if you come near - unless you are sneaking.

Lion

Sits, sniffs, and hunts the way a fox does: a zebra or deer in view will, sooner or later, be chased. Guards its cubs.

Tiger

Whiskers twitch when it sniffs. Takes deer, macaques and farm animals, and comes for anyone within eight blocks of its cub.

Elephant

Cows three blocks tall, bulls three and a half with tusks. Calves are born tuskless and find out which they are when they grow up. Its knees bend.

Brown bear

Sways and sniffs the air, and defends its cub as a polar bear would.

With CityWorld

The city's zoos fill with them.

Install CityWorld ReForged 6.4.0 or newer beside it and the zoos in its park districts get these animals: giraffes behind a taller fence, an elephant in a big paddock or a sunken pit, lions on a savanna lot, macaques in the trees, a bear on the rockery. No configuration.

  • ▸Each animal ships its own habitat and sign text as a datapack entry in CityWorld's zoo registries; CityWorld's catalog picks from them and its own ten residents.
  • ▸Five habitats come with it - savanna, woodland, scrubland, canopy and rockery - each with its own ground, plants, trees, rocks and fence.
  • ▸/cityfind lot zoo finds the nearest zoo.
  • ▸Without CityWorld the animals are still here, in the wild and from the spawn eggs. The datapack entries simply go unread.

In the wild

They spawn naturally in the biomes you would expect, in herds and troops: giraffes, zebras, lions and elephants on the savanna; tigers and macaques in the jungle; deer in forests and taiga; bears in the taiga. No lions in the jungle.

All of it is a dial in config/cityworld_zoo-common.toml: natural spawning on or off, each species on or off, its weight, its herd size and the biomes it spawns in. Hunting and cub defence are switches too.

For other mods

They are plain animals with vanilla goals, a standard constructor and the attributes a mob needs, so a mod that makes variants of creatures - an infected lion, say - can use them as they are.

The entity-type tag #cityworld_zoo:zoo_animals lists all eight for spawn rules, and each has an ordinary loot table under cityworld_zoo:entities/.

Requirements

On the server, and on every client.

These are new creatures with their own models, so a client without the mod cannot join. One jar per Minecraft line, named for the one it was built against - take the one that matches your server.

26.3 26.3.0.58+ beta 25 cityworld_zoo-1.0.0+mc26.3.jar
▸

CityWorld is optional. With CityWorld ReForged 6.4.0 or newer the city's zoos use these animals; an older CityWorld still loads beside it, and its zoos stay vanilla.

▸

26.3 is a NeoForge beta line, and the 26.3 jar needs 26.3.0.58-beta or newer. 26.x needs Java 25, not 21 - Minecraft's requirement rather than this mod's.
