The roster

Sixty-one genera ship with the mod, and all of them are ordinary datapack files. Override any one by putting a file of the same name in a higher-priority pack, silence one with "weight": 0, or switch the whole shipped roster off with builtinGenera = false and run nothing but your own.

Every face in the box

61 genera, side by side.

Same camera distance for every shot, so the sizes are real - that is a Colossus dwarfing a Swarmling, not a display trick. Drag to scroll, or use the arrows.

Weights are relative, drawn against vanillaWeight in the config - and crucially the draw is per base mob, so a husk genus only competes with other husk genera. The Archer at weight 7 gets essentially every eligible skeleton spawn, because nothing else wants skeletons.

Weight 0 means never naturally. Bosses, the player-corpse template and the two non-undead genera are all summon-only, so "61 you can encounter" would overstate it. Most genera also carry spawn conditions, which is why the mix you meet is depth-dependent rather than fixed.

▸

The write-ups below are each genus's own description field - the same text a player reads in the ZombieDex.

Speed horror

28 Days Later, Dying Light.

Genus Weight What it is
Runner 25 Fast, fragile, and only in the dark. The one that made zombies frightening again.
Volatile 4 A night terror off the rooftops - fast, loud, and gone by morning. Do not be out when it is not. Night-time surface only.

The classic shamble

Night of the Living Dead.

Genus Weight What it is
Walker 35 Slow, tough, knockback-resistant, groans at low pitch. The shambling default, and near enough vanilla that it keeps a crowd looking ordinary.
Swarmling 12 One is nothing. That has never once been the situation. Half-size, fast, weak, no abilities at all.

Special infected

Left 4 Dead.

Genus Weight What it is
Boomer 8 Too full to hurry. When it finally reaches you it has one thing left to give, and it gives it all at once - a burst that blinds everything nearby.
Smoker 6 A shape in its own haze, breathing badly. By the time you smell the smoke, something has you by the ankle. Keeps its distance and drags you in.
Hunter 7 Walls are not shelter and pets are not safe. It climbs, it pounces, and it takes the small ones first.
Charger 6 Head down, all shoulder. It crosses the last stretch faster than you expect and arrives like a door coming off its hinges.
Spitter 7 It keeps well back and shares what is rotting inside it, a mouthful at a time. It will not melee you at all.
Tank 2 A wall that walks. The ground objects when it moves, and so will you. 120 HP at 2.2x scale, immovable, with shockwaves that launch you. Deep underground only.

Fungal

The Last of Us.

Genus Weight What it is
Clicker 9 Its eyes went first. It stands in the dark and listens - run and it will find you; hold your breath and creep past, and it may never know you were there. A ten-block follow range, and it hits like a truck.
Bloater 8 Swollen with something that wants out. It mends as it comes, and it does not intend to arrive intact.
Stalker 10 It stands dead still and watches from further than you would credit - up to forty-eight blocks. It never approaches. That is somehow worse.

The 1.8 plugin's own

The originals, rebuilt.

Genus Weight What it is
Crawler 10 Small, quick, and wrong. It takes the wall rather than the stair, and drops from places nothing should hold onto. The old SPIDER.
Stormcaller 2 The sky answers it. Under a roof you are safe; under open air you are a lightning rod that can run. The old LIGHTNING.
Breeder 3 It does not come alone, and it does not stay alone. Leave it standing and count again. Capped at six nearby. The old BREEDER.
Juggernaut 4 Built like a bank vault and about as reasonable. Whatever you did to it last is already healing. 16 armour, 6 toughness.
Coward 30 It remembers enough to be afraid of you. Catching one is the hard part, and worth somebody's money. The original oddity, and still the shortest genus file in the mod.

Elemental and biome-flavoured

Genera that belong somewhere in particular.

Genus Weight What it is
Ember 5 It burnt, and it kept walking. The fire never left - it moved in. Nether or deep underground, immune to burning, trails flame.
Frost 8 It carries the cold with it. Every touch takes some of your speed and gives none of it back. Snowy biomes.
Bogman 10 [drowned] It waded in a long time ago and never quite came out. The swamp kept it; the hunger kept it moving. A drowned, amphibious, swamp only.
Undertow 25 [drowned] It went under a long way out, and whatever it learned down there, it learned to be patient about. It does not have to drag you deep - only deeper than you can swim back from. A drowned that swims and glows; it only ever spawns in overworld water.
Dust Stalker 10 [husk] Dried out and patient. It arrives inside its own storm, and the grit finds your eyes before it finds your throat. A husk, in desert, badlands and savanna.

Armed and organised

The ones that came prepared, and the one that fights by not fighting.

Genus Weight What it is
Screamer 5 It has no intention of fighting you. It just wants everything else to know exactly where you are. No melee goal at all - it acquires you, keeps its distance, and hands you to every monster within twenty-four blocks.
Rioter 6 Kitted for a line that broke a long time ago. The shield still holds, and it still calls its mates. Iron helmet, chainmail, shield, sword, knockback-resistant.
Sapper 4 [husk] It came dressed for demolition, and the axe has a name on it. Somebody's last joke, still swinging. A husk with a Sharpness II iron axe called Pry Bar.

Blinkers and watchers

The teleport ability, pointed at four different ideas.

Genus Weight What it is
Ender Zombie 4 You will not see it move. You will hear where it now is: behind you, already facing you. The 1.8 BACKSTAB, rebuilt.
Weeping Zombie 0 It only moves when nobody is looking. Blink and it is closer. Weight 0 on purpose - summon it deliberately, it is too mean to meet by accident.
Herobrine 1 You have heard the stories. It watches, it does not chase, and it is never there when you turn round. Zero damage, no attack goal, and a quarter of the time it simply leaves.
Ghost 3 It wears the name and face of somebody who walked this world. It watches, it follows, and sometimes it simply is not there any more. The old GHOST, which could only ever borrow the name.

The wall-eaters

Where a wall stops being a solution and becomes a delay.

Genus Weight What it is
Breaker 8 The sound is the warning: knuckles on planks, then on glass, then on whatever you built between you and it. Dirt, sand, gravel, glass, doors, planks.
Big Breaker 2 Walls are not an obstacle to this one. Walls are the way in, and even the deep dark stone barely slows it. Rare, 70 HP, and it eats deepslate as well.
Infester 4 What it breaks, it fills. The stone it leaves behind is not empty. The old INFEST.

Ranged, and reactive

Four ways to be hurt from a distance, and one that learns.

Genus Weight What it is
Archer 7 [skeleton] Something in the bones still remembers the bow. It keeps its distance and looses shaft after patient shaft. Built on a skeleton, so you can actually watch it draw.
Lazer 2 It will not close with you. A thin red line, a smell of burning, and suddenly range is your problem. A hitscan beam drawn in dust particles, with an audible wind-up you can move out of.
Howler 2 You feel it before you hear it - a note through the stone that arrives in your chest. By then it knows exactly where you are. The Warden's sonic boom, fired down a line. Deep underground.
Spitfire 5 It coughs fire in small, accurate mouthfuls. The burns are never large, and never singular. The old LAZER, finally doing something an archer does not.
Zomborg 3 Something in it takes notes. Every wound teaches it, and the lesson holds - change your approach, or stop mattering to it. Take four swings with a sword and the fifth barely registers. The memory survives a restart.

The rest of the 1.8 set

Genus Weight What it is
Weaver 6 It webs the ground you stand on and climbs where you cannot. The fight happens where it chooses. The old WEB.
Outrider 3 It rode in. That should not be possible, and it does not care: the sword is old, the horse is dead, and both still work.
Nightstalker 12 By daylight it keeps its distance and will not be cornered. After dark it stops running. Same creature - the sun decides which one you get.

The spreaders

Two different answers to the defining idea of the genre.

Genus Weight What it is
Biter 6 Its bite hardly bleeds, and that is not what the bite is for. Find milk before the hour does its work. Die within the minute to anything at all, including a fall, and you get up as one of them.
Carrier 5 It is not hunting you in particular. Anything that breathes will do, and whatever it finishes stands back up on its side. A villager rises as a zombie villager, keeping its name and its armour.

Zombies that were people

Most of these use a zombie villager base, which picks from seven biome styles and a dozen professions - roughly ninety looks, every one a texture a vanilla client already ships.

Genus Weight What it is
Townsfolk 14 [zombie villager] Somebody's neighbour. No skills, no weapon, no idea what happened.
Commuter 45 Office worker, still holding the shovel someone gave them at the end. Haunts the high streets it used to walk to work.
Harvester 40 Still working the fields, still holding the hoe. It does not know the harvest is over.
Field Hand 10 [zombie villager] Farm labour that never went home. Slow, patient, and used to long days.
Apothecary 6 [zombie villager] A village healer, still carrying whatever they were mixing. Turned with the rest of them.
Vault Dweller 6 The sirens sounded, the door rolled shut, and the vault kept its promise about survival - after a fashion. The suit still fits. The smile never left.
Corpse 0 A player who died here, wearing their own face and carrying their own things. Kill it to get them back. This is the template the player-zombie feature uses rather than something you meet in the wild.

The world turning

Not people any more, and not really hunting you either.

Genus Weight What it is
Blight 10 Industrial rot on legs. Eats flowers, leaves, grass and moss wherever it walks, and leaves nausea behind it.
Bramble 8 The city taking itself back. Slow, tough, and lays moss as it goes. It is not hunting you; you are simply in the way.
Glowing One 3 Something went very wrong underground. Green from the inside out, and it poisons the air around it. It glows, so you will never be surprised by one.
Sleeper 2 Enormous, ancient, and entirely uninterested in you until you are close enough to touch. Arrows still in it from people who tried.

Seasonal

Gated to a real-calendar date range, recurring every year - invisible the rest of the time.

Genus Weight What it is
Jack 22 Somebody carved a face into it and set it on a shoulder, and the shoulder never put it down. It has been grinning ever since, and it has stopped being funny. Active 24 Oct - 2 Nov.
Krampus 20 It is still doing the rounds. It means you very little harm and it will not stop ringing, and everything that hears a bell in the dark comes to see what rang it. Active 18 Dec - 2 Jan.

Bosses

All weight 0, so they never turn up in the wild. Call them with a command, or build the ritual.

Genus Weight What it is
Patient Zero 0 The first one. Everything since has been a copy of a copy of this. 250 HP at 2x scale, netherite sword, red notched bar, darkened sky and boss music. Poisons at 66%, then at 33% speeds up, hits for 16 and starts blinking behind you.
The Butcher 0 It kept the apron and the cleaver. That is all that is left of the trade. The mid-tier fight: 120 HP, Sharpness II iron axe, yellow notched bar, and deliberately no darkened sky and no boss music, because a mid-boss should not announce itself like the end of the world.
The Borg Queen 0 The hive's one mind. What wounds a drone means nothing; what wounds the queen, every drone soon shrugs off. Kill her before she finishes learning you. She arrives at the end of The Borg Hive.

Not zombies at all

Two genera exist to prove a base does not have to be undead. Both are weight 0 - deliberate encounters, which matters more than usual here, because proximity spawning ignores the base-mob match and any weight above 0 would put giants on the landscape whatever vanilla does.

Genus Weight What it is
Colossus 0 [giant] Something went very wrong in the making of it. It has to stoop to get through the trees, and it does not stoop for anything else. 200 HP on a vanilla giant - which has no AI of its own, so every part of this one's behaviour is the mod's.
Rusted Warden 0 [iron golem] It was built to guard, and it still is. Nobody has told it the village is gone, or that the last thing it recognised as friendly stopped walking a long time ago. An iron golem cannot wear anything, so it is the one genus whose identity is carried entirely by name, attributes and behaviour.

Worth reading the files

Between them they exercise every feature.

If you are writing genera to sit alongside these, the shipped ones are the reference implementation. A few things they show off:

Different base mobs

Bogman is a drowned, Dust Stalker a husk, Archer a skeleton, Colossus a giant. Anything vanilla works.

Navigation swaps

Hunter, Crawler and Weaver climb; Bogman is amphibious.

Attributes beyond the named fields

Tank sets attack knockback and step height, Ember zeroes burning time, Bogman raises its oxygen bonus.

Composed conditions

Ember uses any_of to mean "the Nether or deep underground". Bogman names the two swamps directly, because there is no swamp biome tag to point at.

Abilities as parts

Boomer is fuse plus effect plus particles. Nobody had to write a "boomer ability".

Equipment both ways

Rioter uses bare item ids; Sapper uses the full stack form, with enchantments and a custom name.

A genus that fights by not fighting

Screamer has no melee attack goal at all.

A reactive ability

Herobrine's teleport fires on being shot, outside the tick schedule entirely.

Conditional behaviour

Nightstalker's avoid and melee goals are gated on the clock, so the same mob is two personalities.
